Network Engineer
91³ÉÈ˶¶ÒôÈë¿Ú has an opening for a Network Engineer.
This position works on the Infrastructure & Systems team within LITS’ Enterprise Data, Systems, and Interfaces department at 91³ÉÈ˶¶ÒôÈë¿Ú and reports to the Senior Manager of Infrastructure and Systems. In collaboration with other members of the Infrastructure & Systems team, the Network Engineer implements and administers core components of BMC’s networking infrastructure and related services; coordinates the work of electrical contractors and other third-party work crews; proactively identifies problems or potential problems and proposes creative solutions; develops and presents recommendations to improve established processes and practices. Work is performed in a variety of locations including server rooms, classrooms, office spaces, and mechanical rooms.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Implement, deploy, and maintain network infrastructure
- Uses networking experience and knowledge to administer and operate internal and external networks
- Provides support in maintaining the inventory of network assets, such as switches, routers, access points, and outside/inside copper and fiber plant cabling
- Provides support in maintaining campus communication rooms
- Administers services related to the network infrastructure
Supports, operates, monitors, tests, and troubleshoots hardware and software problems pertaining to the network
- Monitors and evaluates the network to identify problems and make improvements
- Recommends and schedules repairs and updates
- Performs analysis and resolution for network-related problems
- Supports other Library & Information Technology Services staff in support of their job functions
Participation in networking-related projects
- Serves as a vital technical contributor to, and may lead, complex networking projects: Coordinates the work of third-party consultants and contractors, ensures successful implementation of solutions
- Provides networking-related expertise for other campus groups' projects, including building construction and renovation
Provides support to campus community
- Provides second and third tier support to members of the campus in their use of the campus data network.
- Ensures proactive notifications to customers about outages, changes, updates, and new features
Other duties as assigned
- Required to carry a cell phone and to be accessible during off-hours
- Required to work non-standard hours to respond to failures, outages, projects, and scheduled maintenance
- Accepts that on occasion and depending on the situation will be required to work beyond and in addition to the traditional work schedules, including project work and responding to service failures
- Required to support the College during emergencies as needed to meet operational requirements
- Other duties/tasks as assigned.
GENERAL GUIDELINES
- Has high level knowledge of standard networking design, operation, and support.
- Has high level knowledge and experience in operating network equipment including routers, switches, firewalls, load balancers, wireless access points and controllers.
- Has high level knowledge in operating network services including DNS and DHCP.
- Maintains the operational stability of the College’s network.
- Designs and deploys changes to the College’s network.
- Performs root-cause analysis for service impairments or outages.
- Has demonstrated high level knowledge in the following domains: Wireless Networking, Network Routing and Switching, Network Security and Services, Voice.
- Keeps current on technology trends.

- High level knowledge of and experience with fundamental and advanced networking concepts (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, routing, switching, network services and protocols, VLANs and tagging, routing protocols, VPNs, application protocols and packet shaping), common networking equipment (switches, routers, firewalls, wireless access points and controllers, load balancers, VPN appliances) and troubleshooting equipment (packet analyzers, connectivity testers, TDR, OTDR, wireless analyzers).
- Experienced with a broad range of networking technologies in at least one of the following areas: Wireless Networking, Network Routing and Switching, Network Security and Services, Voice.
- Demonstrated understanding of network security concepts.
- Demonstrated experience in designing complex, robust, and secure network solutions.
- Demonstrated experience in analysis of vendor solutions in an enterprise context.
- Strong leadership skills in general and understanding of networking/telecommunications role in college business processes.
- Demonstrated project management experience.
- Works well under limited supervision.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in an applicable field of study, or equivalent experience required.
- 5 – 7 years of experience in the administration and operation of enterprise-wide networking and telecommunications systems with demonstrated increasing responsibilities.
- Preferred: Technical training and certifications that are relevant to networking technologies.
